We Just Can’t Have a Dog

My little boys, hubby and I, we all love dogs and as much as we would like to have one here, we just can’t have a dog or any pet here. Unlike back in the Philippines where having a pet requires little papers and rules or probably not at all, where anyone can have a pet dog any time, where you don’t have to take out your dog three or four times a day, where you don’t have to walk them, where dogs are self-sufficient and so on and so forth. But it’s the opposite here, having a dog means like having another child. Others prefer to have dogs than children because these lovely and adorable animals don’t have to be watched 24 hours a day, they feed themselves, they don’t make a lot of mess, they can guard ┬áthe house and so on and so forth. Having a dog here means a big responsibility too, you have to walk them, you have to pick up their waste , you have to have them legally and a whole lot more.

When I think of how having a pet back home is so much easier than having a pet here, I would sometimes think I would rather go home and own a couple of pure breeds. Having a pet here is just impossible for us even though we would love to have a dog. I don’t think I can manage to have one because of our space, because we have two boys to feed and financially, it’s just not worth it. Someday, when our little boys become grown ups, just for companionship, hubby and I might get a small one, but I don’t know, even with a small dog, we still don’t see ourselves getting a pet here. Even if we talk about it and thinking of things like having to walk them, letting them go even in snow storms or during heavy downpour, those make me decide not to have one.

Thinking of dogs now makes me miss our pet Yaki back home. We hope that when we go home for a vacation, in 5 years or so, we will still be able to see her. I miss her so much and I know that she’s been well taken cared of by my mother-in-law. I hope she still remembers me and hubby when we see here someday. For now, we will just content ourselves with photos of Yaki and seeing dogs here in the apartment and playing with Madison.
